Questions
Is aNewFN free?
Yes. Share prices, Level 2, charts, watchlists, and portfolios cost nothing, and there is no subscription tier for market data. Live London prices need a free private-investor declaration, not a payment.
Do I need an account?
Not to read the help, Clem Chambers' articles and videos, or members' posts. Quotes, Level 2, charts, watchlists, and portfolios need a free account, because the exchange's declaration and your saved lists are tied to it.
Which markets does it cover?
London Stock Exchange shares, including FTSE and AIM, with Level 1 quotes and the Level 2 order book; US shares on the BATS feed with Level 1 only; the major forex pairs; and gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and bitcoin priced in US dollars.
Are the prices real-time?
US shares, forex, metals, and bitcoin are live. London is delayed until you sign the free private-investor declaration on Feeds, and live after that.
Is aNewFN a broker?
No. It does not take orders, hold shares or money, or give personal financial advice. You deal through your own broker and use aNewFN for the prices and for your own record of what you hold.
Can I track my ISA or SIPP?
A portfolio is a record of any account, so an ISA, a SIPP, and a dealing account can each be a separate portfolio, in its own currency, reconciled to its own broker statement. The site does not calculate tax.
Prices, quotes, and Level 2
Most free price sources show you a single number for a share, usually the price of the last trade, often delayed by fifteen or twenty minutes. That is enough to know roughly where a share is, but not enough to deal on. A real quote has two prices: the bid, which is the most anyone is currently willing to pay, and the offer, which is the least anyone is currently willing to sell for. If you buy, you pay the offer; if you sell, you receive the bid. The gap between them is the spread, and it is a real cost of every trade you make. The last trade is a third figure, the price at which the most recent deal actually happened, and it can sit anywhere in or around that spread. aNewFN shows you all three in real time, so your decision rests on the price that is actually available rather than on a stale print.
Behind the quote sits the order book: every buy and sell order that has been placed but not yet filled, at every price. That is Level 2, and it is what tells you whether a price is backed by real demand or by a single small order. For UK shares listed on the London Stock Exchange, the XLON market including FTSE 100, FTSE 250, and AIM companies, aNewFN gives you both the quote and the full Level 2 book. Market data on aNewFN is free: there is no subscription tier for prices or Level 2, and the London declaration costs nothing. London prices start delayed and become live once you have signed a free private-investor declaration on Feeds, because the exchange requires that declaration from anyone receiving real-time data. US shares on the BATS feed have live Level 1 quotes but no order book. Forex, precious metals, and bitcoin are live Level 1 prices on the FX feed, quoted in US dollars, again without a book.
Around the prices are the tools you use to make sense of them: charts of where a price has been, the list of trades that have actually gone through, rankings of the day's biggest movers, a screen for finding shares by their fundamentals, watchlists, and news. A portfolio records what you actually own, what it cost, and what it is worth now, and can be checked against your broker's statement. Clem Chambers, who built the site, publishes commentary and videos, and members discuss shares on a message board and in short posts. If you write your own tools, the same prices are available to a program through the Market Data API.
